Wireless connectivity has become an essential part of modern telematics. Many businesses need to know where their tools, equipment, medical devices, or other assets are. In some cases, extra data, such as temperature, humidity, movement, or door status, is also needed.



This creates a clear need for wireless technologies that can connect assets to a telematics system. Bluetooth EYE Beacons and EYE Sensors already support many practical use cases, however, EYE Beacon Mesh and EYE Sensor Mesh, based on Wirepas Mesh technology, add another option for projects where a larger network of connected devices is required.


BLUETOOTH VS. WIREPAS MESH – FIND THE RIGHT FIT 


Bluetooth and Wirepas Mesh are often compared, yet a direct “which one is better?” comparison is not useful. Both technologies are not built for exactly the same type of deployment. The better question is: what do you need to track, where are the assets moving, and how large is the area?

 

BENEFITS OF BLUETOOTH IN TELEMATICS

 

Bluetooth is commonly used in telematics when wireless EYE Beacons and EYE Sensors send data to a nearby tracker, which then collects it and sends it to a platform.


This approach works well when the asset, sensor, or beacon is close enough to the tracker. For example, a company may want to identify tools inside a service vehicle, monitor cargo temperature, detect movement, or see if the doors are closed.


The main strength of Bluetooth is that it is simple to apply in many existing telematics projects. A business that already uses compatible GPS trackers can add beacons or sensors to collect more data without changing the whole solution architecture.

BENEFITS OF WIREPAS MESH IN TELEMATICS


Wirepas Mesh uses a different communication model. Devices in the network can communicate not only with a Mesh gateway, but also with each other. EYE Beacon Mesh or EYE Sensor Mesh sends data (such as ID or temperature) to nearby anchors, which relay it across the network to gateways. Gateways forward the data to the end user application for real-time insights.


This way is useful when assets are spread across a larger area, especially indoors. In warehouses, hospitals, factories, logistics centres, or large storage areas, assets may move between rooms, shelves, departments, floors, or zones. In these environments, direct communication between every beacon and one gateway is not always practical.


Moreover, if a device goes offline, the Mesh network reroutes automatically – ensuring reliable, scalable connectivity without complex setup. Data can move through other nearby anchor devices until it reaches the gateway.


This makes EYE Mesh tags suitable for larger and denser deployments where many assets need to be monitored in one environment.

START WITH DEPLOYMENT, NOT THE TECHNOLOGY


The technology choice should come after the project requirements are clear. Before comparing Bluetooth and Wirepas Mesh, it is worth answering a few practical questions:


  • How many assets need to be monitored?

  • Are they moving with vehicles or inside a facility?

  • Is the business looking for nearby detection, condition monitoring, or wider indoor visibility?

  • Will the existing tracker infrastructure be enough, or does the project need a separate network approach?

  • Is 1–5 metre accuracy enough for the use case?

  • Is it enough to receive location updates every few minutes?

  • Is the battery life of up to 5 years suitable for the planned deployment?


If the project is built around vehicles, cargo, tools, or equipment that stay close to a tracker, Bluetooth is usually the more direct option. It keeps the solution simple and uses the tracker as the data collection point.


On the other hand, in facilities where many assets move between zones, rooms, shelves, or departments, Wirepas Mesh becomes more relevant. In this case, the value is not only in the tag itself, but in the network that allows devices to pass data through each other.


Accuracy, update frequency, and battery life should also be part of the decision. Some projects do not need exact real-time positioning. For many asset tracking use cases, knowing that an item is in the right zone, receiving updates every few minutes, and having long battery life is more valuable than constant high-frequency data.

Use Bluetooth EYE Beacons and EYE Sensors when the asset and devices are expected to stay close to a compatible tracker. This is the right option for vehicle-based use cases, cargo condition monitoring, tool tracking, worker identification, movement detection, and other scenarios where the tracker can collect data directly.


Use EYE Mesh tags when the assets are spread across a larger indoor area and move independently between zones, rooms, shelves, departments, or floors. This is the right option for warehouses, hospitals, factories, logistics centres, and other facilities where the goal is to monitor many assets as part of one wider network.
