HOW TO READ CAN BUS DATA FROM NON-STANDARD VEHICLES: E-BIKES, E-MOPEDS, AND MORE

HOW TELTONIKA TURNS LOCAL REQUESTS INTO GLOBAL CAN VEHICLE SUPPORT?

18/08/2026

Teltonika devices from the CAN portfolio are designed to give service providers scalable CAN solutions – ones that grow with a fleet instead of requiring complex integration for every new vehicle. The supported vehicle list for FMx150 trackers is a direct result of this approach. As of today, the list covers more than 2,200 vehicle models.

However, each new vehicle on that list may look like a single line in a table. Behind it is a complete process involving close cooperation between clients and Teltonika’s team.

In this article, we explain why streamlined CAN data access matters for service providers, why keeping up with vehicle diversity is a complex challenge, and how Teltonika works with business partners to solve it – turning local requests into a growing global vehicle library.

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF VEHICLE CAN DATA?

Reading a vehicle's CAN data gives service providers direct access to real vehicle performance data – fuel level, battery status, mileage, engine condition, door status, and more – without adding extra sensors or hardware. The result is easier installation, faster deployment, and lower overall project cost.

For telematics service providers, this creates an opportunity to deliver higher-value solutions to the end users – fuel monitoring, EV battery management, driver behaviour analysis, proactive maintenance, safety, and security – all built on data the vehicle is already producing and exchanging over its internal CAN bus network.

THE CHALLENGE OF SUPPORTING DIVERSE VEHICLE FLEETS

Service providers rarely work with a single-brand fleet. Commercial fleets change constantly, creating real challenges: a vehicle supported today may be replaced by a new generation tomorrow, while new market entrants may not yet be covered by an existing CAN database.

For integrators, manually identifying and configuring each vehicle separately increases deployment time and project costs and limits how efficiently a project can scale.

HOW TELTONIKA SOLVES MIXED-FLEETS COMPLEXITY?

Teltonika's FMx150 trackers are advanced telematics devices designed to read a vehicle's CAN data. To make accessing data effortlessly, we provide support for 2,200+ models. Every new vehicle added to this list started as a real need from a business partner somewhere in the world.

As a result, getting started is simple: install the tracker on the vehicle's CAN lines by following the installation guide provided for each vehicle on our list. No custom CAN configuration is needed on the service provider's side, eliminating the complex process of identifying the correct CAN IDs, decoding CAN messages, and mapping each parameter manually for every vehicle model.

For mixed fleets, autoscan feature makes deployment even simpler and faster. It allows FMx150 to automatically identify a compatible vehicle configuration in under two minutes, reducing the need to prepare a separate configuration for each vehicle model. In practice, autoscan is used in almost 50% of FMx150 deployments.

WHAT IF A VEHICLE IS NOT SUPPORTED?

Even a library of more than 2,200 models cannot immediately cover every vehicle. So, how can the Teltonika team and FMx150 devices help close that gap?

The first option is to try autoscan, as it can generate a new OEM file for an unsupported vehicle based on similar models that have already been integrated. However, autoscan cannot guarantee that all expected CAN parameters will be available or that every value will be read correctly.

When verified vehicle support is required, our technical team can perform reverse engineering.

Reverse engineering involves recording the vehicle’s CAN communication under defined operating conditions, identifying messages linked to the required parameters, and verifying that the decoded values correspond to the vehicle’s actual state. Once the integration has been validated, a vehicle-specific OEM file can be prepared and included in the FMx150 vehicle library.

Depending on vehicle availability, the requested parameters, and project conditions, support for a new vehicle can be delivered in less than one month.

GLOBAL SUPPORT BUILT ON LOCAL COOPERATION

Automotive markets differ significantly between regions. Models widely used in Southeast Asia, Africa, or Latin America may be uncommon in Europe, and regional versions of the same vehicle can use entirely different electronic architecture.

Teltonika’s global presence, with 27 offices across multiple continents, provides a networkof local hubs for global partner support. Across these regions, technical engineers can perform on-site CAN data collection from unsupported vehicles for further integration into FMx150 supported vehicle list.

This local cooperation is becoming increasingly valuable as Chinese and other Asian manufacturers expand into new markets. Service providers are increasingly encountering passenger cars, trucks, electric two-wheelers, and specialised machinery that aren't yet familiar in every region.

Hendri Dwi Santoso, Technical Support Engineer at Teltonika Indonesia, explains: “When we first started providing local reverse engineering support in Indonesia, we encountered many vehicles from China and Japan that were new to us. Understanding their architecture and preparing OEM support was challenging at first. However, every new vehicle expands our knowledge and makes similar integrations easier in the future.”

THE RESULT: A GROWING SUPPORTED VEHICLE LIST

This partner-driven approach is how FMx150 supported vehicle list has grown to more than 2,200 models today. Before starting a project, partners can check which vehicle versions and CAN parameters are already supported, then either select the appropriate vehicle-specific OEM file during configuration or let autoscan handle the process automatically.

"One of the key goals of FMx150 devices is to provide scalable CAN solutions that deliver the highest value to our clients worldwide," says Robertas Armonaitis, Product Manager for the CAN portfolio at Teltonika.

AUTOMOTIVE MARKET OVERVIEW

During the first half of 2026, Teltonika added 66 vehicles to FMx150 supported vehicle list.

The additions reflect changes taking place across global vehicle markets – 33 of these vehicles were electric. Moreover, with the latest update to the FMx150 vehicle library, Teltonika reached another milestone: support for 150+ electric vehicle models. The geographical distribution of these additions also shows the growing diversity of vehicle manufacturers.

Bar chart titled Newly supported vehicles by OEM brand origin, with China highest, then Germany and Japan; other countries lower.

Behind every addition is a real project need – a vehicle required for a new deployment, an on-site meeting, technical analysis, parameter validation, and cooperation between regional and product teams.

The supported vehicle list grows through real projects and reflects the vehicles that Teltonika business partners encounter in their local markets.
