Vehicle ignition interlocking utilising breathalyser, immobilizer scenario, 1-Wire technology and FMx125 series GPS tracker VEHICLE IGNITION INTERLOCKING WITH BREATHALYSER AND GPS TRACKER INTRO Alcohol remains the most commonly used substance and addiction in many countries. The fact is that drivers with high blood alcohol concentrations are at much greater risk of traffic accidents. It means more crashes, property losses, injuries, and deaths. That is why corporate fleet drivers’ breath testing routine alongside comprehensive vehicle tracking and data monitoring becomes not only an attractive option but a smart investment. CHALLENGE Did you know, according to the drunk driving statistics data collected by forbes.com , more than a quarter (25%) of all traffic-related deaths directly result from alcohol impairment? Every day in the USA alone, about 37 people die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 52 minutes, and it costs more than $132 billion each year. That is a colossal number and might be one of the biggest and continues for decades tragedies on the roads. The dangers of drinking and driving are many: slow reaction time, lack of coordination, reduced concentration, decreased vision, and inhibited judgment. Sadly, alcohol (or driving under the influence) has long been known as a roadway killer since the dawn of the motor industry. Inevitably, it results in higher insurance rates and taxes, human, medical and property costs. Not to mention, family, friends, and co-workers grieve, intense sadness, anger or even revenge. One of the strategies to prevent alcohol-impaired driving in corporate fleets is mandatory sobriety and breath testing procedures before starting vehicle ignition. To help fleet managers and business owners with that, Teltonika has successfully developed the 'Alcotester Check' functionality. SOLUTION It includes a driver’s authentication method based on the 1-Wire communication bus system combining a contactless Radio-frequency identification (RFID) card, 1-Wire RFID reader, immobilizer scenario , PROFESSIONAL category vehicle tracker Teltonika FMC125 and breathalyser Alcovisor Mercury for drivers’ blood alcohol content (aka BAC) limit checks and ignition interlocking. The latter communicates with a GPS device via serial port RS232 and a USB connector. The breathalyser uses an electrochemical fuel cell to measure the alcohol concentration from the sample of the expired breath from an individual (in this case - the driver). If alcohol is present, a corresponding voltage is generated from the fuel cell, which is proportional to the alcohol content of the sample provided. After that, the voltage level is converted to BAC respectively, which is then displayed. For a convenient power supply, it can be connected to a vehicle cigarette adaptor. Alcovisor Mercury model can perform two types of tests - ‘Screening Test’ (aka ‘Passive Mode’) to detect alcohol presence or absence (‘Alcohol Detected’ or ‘No Alcohol’) with a reusable sampling cup attached to sample port and ‘Standard Test’ (aka ‘Active Mode’) to get the accurate BAC results using a disposable mouthpiece attached to sample port. Because of practical measures, we utilise only the ‘Screening Test’ in this use case. How it works - both, the 1-Wire RFID reader and breathalyser have to be mounted inside the vehicle, connected to Teltonika GPS device and set up accordingly. To start a vehicle engine, two steps must be passed successfully, one after another - driver’s authentication and alcotester check routine. If any of them fail, the ignition starter will remain disconnected to prevent driving. The relevant events data and alert notifications will be initiated and sent to a dedicated server and FM platform to be monitored by fleet management and/or the person in charge. To get through, every fleet driver is given an RFID card with a unique factory-programmed 64-bit identification number. When starting a shift, a person has to authenticate itself by bringing an RFID card nearer to a 1-Wire RFID reader. If it is successful, the next step - the alcotester check procedure. To do so, a driver has to breathe in a reusable sampling cup attached to the sample port of a breathalyser. If alcohol is found in the breath sample, the alcotester check fails which stops immobilizer authorisation. Finally, if both steps, driver’s authentication and alcotester check, passed successfully, the ‘start of shift’ event electronic date and time stamp will be generated and registered, an ignition starter engaged. Vehicle driving is authorised, and an employee is welcome to start his/her duties. If not, vehicle driving remains restricted, and a driver has to follow an internal company procedure for this matter. When a shift has finished, and a driver is done for the day, the RFID card has to be touched to a 1-Wire RFID reader again to generate an ‘end of shift’ electronic stamp, and now vehicle ignition can be switched off for good. How to set up - to make the ignition interlock work correctly, FMC125 vehicle tracker has to be set up using Teltonika configurator . Firstly, the ‘Alcotester Check’ option has to be enabled within the ‘Immobilizer’ feature as shown below: Secondly, GPS tracker RS232 mode with breathalyser Mercury model has to be configured allowing corresponding data communication between two devices. To provide an electrical connection, USB connector pins TXD and GND of Alcovisor Mercury should be connected to RS232 port pins RXD and GND of FMC125 tracker accordingly. Also, the breathalyser unit has to be calibrated as advised by its manual. The vehicle ignition interlock method can be successfully applied for most corporate fleets using light vans: telecoms, internet and cable service providers, utility service businesses, postal offices, sanitation, construction, manufacturing and processing, non-food retail, wholesale companies and others. - Secure Vehicle Disabling With GPS Trackers
Teltonika GPS trackers have a remote secure engine cut-off functionality that can help to recover a stolen vehicle SECURE VEHICLE DISABLING INTRO Motor vehicle theft is one of the world’s biggest concerns and the fastest-growing crime in many countries around the world. This great challenge for car rental agencies, carsharing clubs, businesses, state organisations and private car owners caused property losses of over 6 billion US dollars globally in 2018. Luckily for them, Teltonika GPS trackers have a remote secure engine cut-off (SECO) functionality that can help recover a stolen vehicle and prevent loss. CHALLENGE As statistics show it all over the world, most of the time thieves are well organised and can steal a targeted vehicle such as an automobile, truck, bus, motorcycle, scooter, or snowmobile in a matter of a few seconds. For instance, a car is being stolen every 35 min in Germany, every 10 min in Australia and every 6.5 min in the US. Another extensive issue – stolen rental cars. For example, between 2015 and 2018, 92,000 rental cars were stolen in Texas alone in the United States. Unfortunately, police forces fail to recover over half of the stolen vehicles. For criminals, it is a relatively low-risk way of making a fortune. Some known methods used by thieves to steal motor vehicles are theft of an unattended vehicle without a key; taking a vehicle without owner’s consent (twocking); opportunistic theft; carjacking; fraudulent theft; joyriding; frosting; Keyless-Go systems theft and so on. Also, erratic and intentionally inappropriate driver behaviour and unauthorised use of rental cars cause faster engine, tyres, and components wear, extra fuel consumption, traffic accidents, road infrastructure damage and may result in a substantial amount of expenses for business over time. While other remote vehicle disabling systems available in the market have some drawbacks, Teltonika has come up with the most secure and efficient solution by far – SECO. SOLUTION Keeping in mind the scale of motor vehicle thefts and the demand for a solution in the market, Teltonika introduced a remote vehicle disabling system in its GPS trackers known as secure engine cut-off or SECO. This functionality is available in any FMB series tracker with one or more digital output (DOUT) and it takes only a few minutes to set up. For this case, we use the new generation Teltonika model FMB130 with flexible I/O. The system is used to prevent unauthorised users from operating a vehicle and to gradually decelerate and stop a vehicle in transit under certain pre-determined conditions. In a nutshell, it has been designed to be activated for specific situations, such as unauthorised access or the use of a vehicle. SECO provides authorised users with the ability to prevent the movement of a vehicle and eventually to stop an operating vehicle with GPRS or SMS text command by simply pressing a button in a dedicated fleet management software program or mobile app. How it works - when the stolen vehicle speed exceeds the preconfigured threshold speed, the Speed Pulse Scenario will be activated forcing the driver to slow down. After that, when the stolen vehicle speed inevitably goes lower than the preconfigured threshold speed, the GPS tracker will disable speed pulsing and will activate DOUT permanently. So, the vehicle will be gradually and safely decelerated and stopped by controlling the fuel pump of the car. In essence, remote disabling allows a car owner, a dispatcher or other authorised personnel safely to decelerate a stolen vehicle by gradually limiting a fuel supply to the engine from a remote location. Thus, it will be inevitably brought to a safe and controlled stop which allows to avoid traffic incidence, road infrastructure damage or casualties. When it’s done, the stolen but now stalled vehicle location can be swiftly tracked by the Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) software application in a smartphone, tablet or PC and recovered at once. As a result, automobile loss (and the goods) has been successfully prevented. Furthermore, all Teltonika GPS trackers are equipped with Immobilizer, Unplug detection, Towing detection, Auto Geofence, and Manual Geofence features which can be used in combination with SECO making a theft process even more challenging and vehicle a less appealing target. Vehicle disabling system can be integrated with other onboard wireless communications systems that include features such as door sensors, cargo sensors, temperature sensors, electronic cargo seals, and trailer connection and disconnection systems. For example, if the vehicle onboard computer system installed by a car maker or aftermarket supplier detects a loss of signal from the communication network or tampering with electronic cargo seals, a pre-determined vehicle disabling protocol can be initiated. Please be advised that SECO functionality is only available in Teltonika FMB series GPS trackers starting with the firmware version 03.28.02 or higher.
