Tracking can be interrupted when vehicles drive through dense urban areas with tall buildings, tunnels, underground car parks, or other locations where signals are blocked. Thanks to dead reckoning feature, FTC887 device overcomes these limitations. By using built-in accelerometer and gyroscope data, our tracker continuously measures movement, direction, and speed, thus providing accurate location data and ensuring that businesses can continue their operations without any struggle. Dead reckoning feature helps to avoid these data gaps, ensuring precise and reliable reporting. When satellite signals are intentionally blocked, devices with dead reckoning allow fleet managers to maintain visibility of a vehicle’s route and location, improving the likelihood of vehicle recovery. FTC887 PAGE FAQ How long can dead reckoning continue without GPS signal? Although dead reckoning can continue tracking when the GPS signal is lost, it is not a replacement for standard GPS-based tracking. The best performance is achieved when both data sources are used together, as they complement each other. When a device relies on dead reckoning only for an extended period, positional errors gradually accumulate. So, dead reckoning is most effective as a short-term support mechanism until reliable GPS signal is restored. Does dead reckoning require any specific type of installation? To achieve maximum results, it is better to set up tracking device correctly. The detailed information on proper preparation is available on our Wiki page . Firstly, the tracker must be mounted firmly in the vehicle, with good visibility of the sky. Secondly, since dead reckoning feature is available only with FT platform devices, it is configurable via Telematics Configuration Tool (TCT). Finally, once device mounting adheres to the guidelines, alignment can be performed. The device must finish a specific alignment process to determine its mounting orientation. During this process, there are specific conditions that must be met: 1. The device must be stationary with clear sky visibility for at least 3 minutes. 2. Vehicle speed during alignment should be between 10 km/h and 100 km/h, with varying speeds preferred over extended constant-speed driving. 3. Avoid driving in underground tunnels or areas with a poor GPS signal, otherwise, alignment needs to be restarted from the second step.
