Managing rental vehicles safely requires more than knowing where they are. Fleet owners need reliable information about how vehicles are driven and whether they remain ready for use.

This is particularly important in Türkiye, where nearly 34 million vehicles operate in a challenging traffic environment. In 2025, more than 1.5 million road traffic accidents were recorded, with around 345,000 faults associated with accidents involving death or injury.

The most frequently recorded driver fault was failure to adjust vehicle speed to road, weather, and traffic conditions, accounting for around 115,000 cases. This was followed by right-of-way violations at junctions, crossings, and narrow road sections, with almost 53,000 cases, and rear-end collisions, with around 30,000 cases.

For companies providing long-term vehicle rental services, these figures highlight the importance of monitoring not only vehicle location but also usage, driver behaviour, and vehicle condition. Better visibility helps protect valuable assets, support accountable vehicle use, and reduce exposure to accidents, repair costs, administrative work, and potential vehicle loss.

BEYOND BASIC GPS TRACKING

N2 Mobil, one of Türkiye’s largest mobile fleet management providers, delivers telematics solutions to commercial and public-sector customers in the country.

One of the customers, a rental organisation, manages approximately 20,000 electric and internal combustion vehicles from multiple manufacturers. Their cars are provided primarily for long-term rental, making reliable monitoring essential throughout their operational life.

Basic GPS tracking could show where each vehicle was located, but the information was limited about its condition and use. The customer needed a more advanced solution capable of collecting vehicle data, monitoring driver behaviour, supporting geofence-based control, and operating reliably across a large and technically diverse fleet.

The project also had to meet strict requirements for data security, remote device management, warranty-sensitive installation, and long periods of vehicle inactivity.

THE CHALLENGE OF A DIVERSE VEHICLE MARKET

Türkiye’s automotive market includes manufacturers from Europe, Asia, and the domestic market. According to the Automotive Distributors’ and Mobility Association’s 2025 retail sales report, 1,368,400 vehicles were sold between January and December.

For a telematics provider working with a large rental fleet, this diversity creates a significant integration challenge. Different manufacturers, models, production years, and regional vehicle architectures may expose different CAN data.

As a result, a solution designed around only a small number of popular models would restrict N2 Mobil’s ability to deploy vehicles quickly and support the customer’s evolving fleet.

LARGE-SCALE CAN DATA COVERAGE WITH FMC150

To address this challenge, N2 Mobil selected Teltonika’s FMC150 tracker with an integrated CAN data processor.

FMC150 device combines real-time vehicle tracking with more than 100 CAN parameters, providing significantly deeper fleet visibility than basic GPS tracking alone. The supported vehicle library currently covers 2,200+ vehicle models, including widely used Renault, Fiat, Toyota, BYD, and other European and Asian models, as well as vehicles produced for the Turkish market.

Such broad coverage allows N2 Mobil to deploy this telematics solution across mixed fleets instead of sourcing different hardware for cars of different manufacturers.

Once the appropriate vehicle OEM file is selected, or autoscan is performed, FMC150 tracker collects CAN parameters and transmits them to the fleet management platform. Depending on the specific vehicle model, parameters may include fuel information, battery status, mileage data, door status, and other parameters required for monitoring vehicle use and condition.

For N2 Mobil, the supported vehicle library provides the foundation for scalable deployment across thousands of rental cars.

EXTENDING VEHICLE SUPPORT THROUGH REVERSE ENGINEERING

The supported vehicle list alone cannot cover every model that may enter a large and constantly changing rental fleet. New vehicles, locally manufactured electric cars, and regional variants may have not yet been supported by FMC150 device.

This is where Teltonika’s technical expertise becomes particularly valuable.

When N2 Mobil encounters a vehicle that is not yet included in the supported list, Teltonika engineers analyse its CAN communication, identify the required parameters, and prepare a vehicle-specific OEM file. Depending on the model availability and project requirements, the necessary support can be provided in less than one month.

The combination of a large supported vehicle library and responsive reverse engineering support gives N2 Mobil the flexibility to work with both widely used international brands and more specialised or locally manufactured cars.

WARRANTY-FRIENDLY INSTALLATION AND LONG-TERM VEHICLE READINESS

Many vehicles entering the project are newly purchased and remain covered by manufacturer warranties, while some may stay parked between rental periods for two or three months. The solution therefore had to protect both the vehicle’s original electrical system and its battery.

N2 Mobil uses ECAN02 contactless CAN accessory to read vehicle data without cutting or damaging the original wiring, helping preserve warranty-sensitive installations.

Since rental demand can fluctuate, some vehicles may remain parked for two or even three months between assignments. FMC150 device’s low-power sleep modes minimise battery drain during these extended idle periods, helping ensure that the car is ready to operate when it is needed again.

Together, these capabilities support safe installation and help ensure that vehicles remain ready for operation when they are needed again.

RESULTS: GREATER CONTROL ACROSS 20,000 VEHICLES

With FMC150 tracker at the core of N2 Mobil’s solution, the rental organisation gained greater visibility across its fleet. Instead of relying on GPS location only, fleet owner can use vehicle and telematics data to monitor:

  • driver behaviour,

  • routes and historical movement,

  • entry into and exit from predefined geofences,

  • vehicle activity and extended idle periods,

  • critical situations and events requiring immediate attention.

Combining ECAN02, low-power sleep modes, remote device management platform FOTA WEB, and Teltonika’s reverse engineering support, this is a scalable solution that N2 Mobil can deploy to encourage safer driving behaviour and protect valuable fleet assets in Türkiye.
