ARTWORK TRACKING WITH ATX700 DEVICES
INTRO
Shipping fine art involves much more than simply adding a "fragile" label and hoping for the best. Galleries and logistics professionals must navigate complex transportation routes and coordinate with various partners. Tracking fine art is now more complex and risky than before. As the art market grows, with global sales hitting $57.5 billion in 2024, the chances of theft or damage are high. Expensive artworks, sometimes worth tens or even hundreds of millions, are tempting targets for thieves and can easily be damaged during transport. This rising demand is causing new problems for galleries, shipping companies, and collectors.
CHALLENGE
Art theft and mishandling during transportation remain major concerns in the global art market. According to the Art Loss Register, over $6 billion worth of art is stolen annually, making it a lucrative and persistent threat. Much of this theft occurs during transit or due to poor tracking and documentation, where even minor lapses can lead to the disappearance of priceless items.
Additionally, environmental threats and operational mishaps pose significant risks. A report by AXA Art Insurance notes that over 50% of art damage occurs during handling and transit. Traditional methods – manual checklists, or paper-based documentation – lack real-time visibility. For museums, galleries, and private collectors moving artworks between cities or countries, this creates logistical blind spots, drives up insurance costs, and introduces serious vulnerabilities.

SOLUTION
We introduce a solution for tracking valuable assets like artwork, tailored to address the security and visibility challenges associated with transporting and storing high-value items. At the core of this solution is the Teltonika ATC700, a compact, autonomous 4G LTE Cat 1 tracker from the ATx700 series, engineered for precision, discretion, and long-term reliability.
How it works - To safeguard fine art in transit or storage, the ATx700 is discreetly installed on artwork crates, frames, or shipping pallets. Its water-resistant casing ensures protection against dust and water, making it suitable for a wide range of environmental conditions – from climate-controlled museum vaults to logistics hubs. Periodic location data reports ensure continuous visibility of artwork. This feature works by sending location updates at pre-defined intervals, allowing gallery managers to monitor artwork in real time without excessive data usage or power consumption.
The device has a movement-based tracking feature: in the on-move scenario, when artwork is being transported or handled, the ATx700 detects motion and begins transmitting location data at regular intervals, ensuring real-time visibility. In the on-stop scenario, once the artwork is stationary, the device detects when the artwork stops moving and generates a record after a predefined period.
These modes optimise the balance between power efficiency and tracking accuracy, critical for assets that are frequently moved between countries, exhibitions, or storage facilities.
Additionally, the built-in multi-action button adds operational flexibility. It can be configured to trigger specific alerts, switch tracking modes, or signal completion of key logistics steps – all with a single press. This feature supports real-time updates from curators, handlers, or logistics staff in the field.
Another key benefit is geofencing*, which adds an extra layer of security to art logistics. You can create virtual boundaries around approved routes, ensuring your artwork shipment follows the correct path. If the artwork strays from these predefined zones, you’ll receive an alert right away. This feature reduces the risk of theft or diversion, giving you peace of mind that your valuable shipment is on track.
Given that art loans, exhibitions, and international shipments can last weeks or months, all the ATx700 series trackers have a rechargeable battery and can be connected to a power bank for extended deployments. This guarantees uninterrupted tracking throughout the journey.
Finally, all data collected is transmitted over cellular networks to a tracking platform. Here, operators and stakeholders can view artwork movement, define geofences, receive alerts, and make informed decisions to protect their cultural assets.
In essence, the Teltonika ATx700 series empowers galleries, museums, and collectors with a powerful, intelligent, and discreet tracking solution – ensuring that priceless artworks are always accounted for, wherever they are in the world.
*The geofence feature will be available in a future firmware update. The update can be easily installed using TCT.
