EV MONITORING FOR CITY CLEANING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT

INTRO

According to the United Nations, “the world is becoming increasingly urban”, with 45% of the global population living in the cities. This shift and the rise of so called “megacities” with 10 million inhabitants or more make a sustainable waste management and city cleaning especially important. The municipalities have to make sure that they provide these essential services across the city area in an efficient way, staying within the city budget and complying with local emission regulations. These issues can be effectively addressed by implementing telematics with Teltonika trackers.

CHALLENGE

With the world population growth and increasing tendency to produce more waste, it’s getting even more challenging to control various aspects of city cleaning and waste management. It’s crucial to assure accurate trip planning for waste collection, react in a timely manner to the weather forecast and assure seasonal works like snow cleaning and street sprinkling during winter months. The variety of jobs that should be performed by different types of vehicles and on different schedules creates a challenge for the fleet manager.

What is more, the cities have to assure the CO2 emission control and noise pollution reduction. Urban population advocates for healthier cities and regulators create the framework for it. EU has CO2 emission reduction goals since 2021 and now is aiming to reduce the net greenhouse gas emission by 90% in 2040. This and similar regulations in other parts of the world push municipalities to replace traditional “dirty” diesel utility vehicles with electric ones. Electric road sweepers become more and more popular in Europe, USA municipalities start to electrify their fleets.

This transition to electric vehicles and the need to operate a mixed fleet makes accurate maintenance planning especially challenging. Meantime assuring an effective utility fleet maintenance is the core of a successful waste management and city cleaning. Reducing the cost of repairs and avoiding service interruptions leads to the lower costs for the tax payer and a better living environment for the urban population. In order to implement an effective fleet maintenance, a right telematics solution is required. A solution able to work with different types of e-utility vehicles, to resist difficult weather conditions and to provide an accurate track in a dense urban environment.

SOLUTION

To address various use cases of municipal fleet management, we highly recommend utilising Teltonika E-MOBILITY FTx305 devices. These small and robust Teltonika tracking devices have 10-97 V range to support different e-utility vehicles, such as electric garbage trucks and lorries, city e-cleaning vehicles and other assets of municipal fleets. CAN data reading capability allows to monitor the status of vehicle and plan the maintenance proactively. The water and dust-resistant IP67-rated casing allows it to be used even in harsh environmental conditions.

How it works - the manual CAN feature, integrated into FTx305 devices, allows reading raw CAN data - for instance, ignition and lock status, battery level, charging status, etc. - from transports ECU without requiring to develop custom CAN protocol support. This versatility is especially important while working with a mixed fleet of vehicles with different CAN protocols and different sets of parameters. FTx305 devices allow to create custom CAN ID database with up to 70 parameters specified directly in device configuration.

The CAN data reading allows fleet managers can keep track of battery status remotely and notify a driver when it’s required to return to the base to recharge the electric vehicle. What is more, monitoring battery state of health allows to detect potential issues early, change charging habits and to plan required maintenance on time. This ensures that the fleet of utility equipment is always fully operational and ready for action.

CAN data reading also allows to identify useful vehicle performance in a more accurate way. Reading the status of the equipment attached to the vehicle, for example the position of the sweeping brush or the status of the salt and chemicals sprinkler, helps to evaluate if the vehicle was performing its task successfully.

Manual CAN command functionality can enable vehicle immobilisation securing it from burglars. Besides, the 1-Wire feature makes it possible to have only authorised personnel use the special vehicle after they have authenticated themselves with a 1-Wire RFID reader or iButton key.

The practical Geofence scenario allows fleet managers to define a geographical zone and assign a driver to collect waste in specific areas, ensuring that the work is carried out properly in the designated areas. Even more, the overspeeding feature allows a driver to be alerted when the utility vehicle exceeds a pre-set maximum speed, preventing irresponsible driving that could lead to a traffic accident, injuries, penalties, service delays, etc.

Additionally, FTx305 devices benefit from such FT platform innovations like a more precise track. Able to lock up to 41 satellites simultaneously, the devices map an accurate track even when high-rise buildings limit the access to the open sky. Also smart ignition detection feature available with all FT platform devices helps to identify the start of the trip in an accurate way regardless the battery health.
